Dragon Ball Daima is….Good?
WRITTEN BY JEREMY “KOKUGATSU” GRIFFIN
The short answer: Yes. Yes it is.
Yes, you read that title correct. Dragon Ball Daima is finally here and it has created a huge shock appeal for Dragon Ball fans everywhere. But I remember when fans were up in arms about the new series by the late Akira Toriyama. How could they make a new show when Super is open on such a cliffhanger? Will anyone ever beat Black Frieza? Is Beast Gohan truly stronger than his dad? Will Vegeta be the next G.O.D.? There are so many questions left un-answered and these are just a few. Add on to the fact that Daima previewed…kid versions?!?! A completely different story?! Was this a joke? So many fans were upset, and to be honest, I was one of them. As such I went into Daima expecting the worst. I stopped looking at any updates, but every article seemed worse than the last. I was nervous it was going to flop. But then Sparking Zero was announced and finally came out. People loved it and it sparked a new hope for the franchise. Then on October 11th, 2024 on Crunchyroll, an amazing thing happened. Without further ado, let’s ZONE in on it!
Most every article and video is talking about the shocking reveals of the first episode. Since the first 2 episodes are now available on Netflix and online, we can dive into spoilers so warning ahead. So this serves as your warning.
In this blog I will talk about these 4 key points to take away from the first episode:
Time Period of the series
What is the Demon Realm
Meeting Goma and Shin’s Siblings
and
The Truth of the Namekians
How Does It Fit?
So to begin with, what time period does Daima take place? Well we have awesome fans to help figure this out. Sparing you the details due to your precious time, Diama is speculated to take place almost one year after Kid Buu’s defeat. Key factors that led to this theory are Trunk’s revealed age and that that the dragon balls are still stone. However, knowing the time frame does not help out the canon. Whether this series is actually canon to the current timeline or, like with GT, will take place in an alternate timeline, is still up in the air. Many things are not fully lined up yet, so depending on these things, the time frame could also change.
To the Home of Evil and Demons
The Demon Realm is gong to be the most talked about in this blog because this is where the main story timeline will take place. We are finally introduced to the Demon Realm as something other than HFIL. We get a good breakdown of the Demon Realm as we got good speculation when we were introduced to Demon King Dabura in the Buu Saga of DBZ. We learn that a new king, Goma, has taken over after Dabura’s death at the hands of Majin Buu, just as Dabura superseded his father Abura. But more on Goma later. We also learn that the role of Demon King is a huge importance in creating a balance between the energies of the Universe and as such they have their own Kaioshin as well, just like the Gods of Destruction, known as the MaKaioshin. We do not get much more information from here yet, but just this is enough of a world building from the great mind of the late Toriyama.
The New Honchos
We got a good look into this kingdom and will learn more of the new king, Goma. Because it is the first episode, we do not get much information on him, but we do learn he is looking for this “Mystical Third Eye,” which is what led him to turning our heroes and the humans into children. Many fans speculate that Tien and his clan, that we were hinted at all the way back in Dragon Ball, will play a big role in this story. We have gotten huge power-ups from all the other Z fighters, except the humans, and now Tien may wind up getting the next power-up as he may play a huge role in taking down the new Demon King. But again, this is just a fan speculation.
We also get to meet Goma’s MaKaioshin, which we find out is Shin’s little brother, Degesu. We are now introduced as the second evil Kai in the series after Zamasu from Universe 10. We also meet Dr. Arinsu, who is the sister of both Shin and Degesu. She is also on the villains side as well and we are going to see a huge family squabble this series. Very little information is given on out antagonists, but with what information we have, we can speculate that they are definitely dangerous.
A Step Closer to the Truth
The last thing we get to learn is the truth of the Namekians through the introduction of our last antagonist, Neva, an elder Namekian who has has unique power to be able to reawaken dragon balls even after they have been turned to stone. In his reveal, we also learn that Namekins are actually from the demon realm. Majority of them left and found other planets to occupy. This answers a lot of questions as to why it is that there was a Planet Namek and in Super we find that Namekians are found in other planets across the universe, i.e. Granolah having a Namekian guardian and why King Piccolo inhabited Earth way back in the time before DragonBall. He also stated that every creature with pointy ears have ties to the Demon Realm, which do not fully make sense, but we will just let it go here. Mr. Popo’s training is starting to make sense….First rule of Popo’s Training….
Either was we learned a lot from this episode. Like I said, Episode 1 and 2 are available now on Crunchyroll and Netflix with Episode 3 coming soon this Friday the 25th. This show is already amazing me and I can’t wait to see more. Now if you don’t mind me, I’m going back to playing Sparking Zero. I finally just got past Great Ape Vegeta. Hey how about we all play together? Drop your gamer tags in the comments and we can all link and play together. Until next time, as my man JB always says: Stay Nerdy Friends!!! Great things are coming. For now, we are ZONEing out!!!
